Summary
Greetings from Cambridge, England.
Yesterday our group had the opportunity to view some of the Cairo Geniza fragments introduced to the university by Solomon Schechter in 1896 and enjoyed a lecture with two of the library's research associates. On our way to Cambridge we paid a visit to Waddesdon Manor, one of the many Rothschild summer homes. We did not see any Judaica, but the home was filled with historical treasures from top to bottom. I look forward to sharing more about the trip next week.
A week ago today, on the summer solstice, we read the following headline in a London newspaper: Deadly heatwaves are scorching cities on four continents as the Northern Hemisphere marks the first day of summer, a sign that climate change may again help to fuel record-breaking heat that could surpass last summer as the warmest in 2,000 years. Record temperatures in recent days are suspected to have caused hundreds, if not thousands, of deaths across Asia and Europe.
It is hard not to feel shaken by these painful statistics which can lead to paralysis and inertia. We cannot give up. Every little step we take to reverse global warming is meaningful and important.
Congratulations to those who worked on the "Keep the Law" campaign with Dayenu and RAC CA. The oil and gas companies saw the polling and the strong colation that had been assembled. They pulled the oil drilling referendum from the ballot, so SB1137 goes into effect, and we will not have to vote to keep the law in November. California is protected from neighborhood drilling.Â
THERE IS SO MUCH MORE THAT NEEDS TO BE DONE!

Chutzpah - Dayenu’s signature non-partisan effort to mobilize climate-concerned voters in key states - is going into full swing. The goal is to elect climate champions at the local, state and federal levels who have the chutzpah to deliver urgent action on climate at the scale that science and justice demand. Dayenu provides a full menu of actions that voters in every state can take in the months leading up to the 2024 election.
We hope you'll consider joining the Orange County team if you live in the area.
AND THAT’S NOT ALL!
Our friends at Climate Action Campaign are speaking out against the fact that California lawmakers continue to make rooftop solar expensive to use, even though sunshine is free.Â
The CPUC recently made rooftop solar less cost-effective for multi-meter properties like schools, farms, apartments, and more by placing restrictions that prevent energy generated on one meter from benefitting a different meter on the same property.
The good news is that, if passed, Senate Bill 1374 can rectify the problem by giving multi-meter properties credit for consuming solar power. On July 1st, the Assembly Utilities and Energy Committee will review this bill, and we need them to vote YES.Â
Please take 30 seconds to send a ready-made email to your representative to keep solar alive. Committee Chair Cottie Petrie-Norris needs to hear that we are in support of this bill. Thank you!

Experiencing inexplicable pain and suffering is an aspect of the human condition that people of every faith tradition have wrestled with for millennia. The Book of Job invites us into a conversation about the connection between suffering and punishment by exploring the story of one righteous man confronted with overwhelming misfortune through no fault of his own. Join us as we explore the complex topic of theodicy and pathways for coping in the face of disaster.
