"Then Moses told the people of Israel, “The Lord has specifically chosen Bezalel son of Uri, grandson of Hur, of the tribe of Judah. The Lord has filled Bezalel with the Spirit of God, giving him great wisdom, ability, and expertise in all kinds of crafts.  He is a master craftsman, expert in working with gold, silver, and bronze. He is skilled in engraving and mounting gemstones and in carving wood. He is a master at every craft. And the Lord has given both him and Oholiab son of Ahisamach, of the tribe of Dan, the ability to teach their skills to others. The Lord has given them special skills as engravers, designers, embroiderers in blue, purple, and scarlet thread on fine linen cloth, and weavers. They excel as craftsmen and as designers." (Exodus 30: 30-35)
Image result for artist paletteDid you ever wonder who actually wove the coat of many colors that Jacob gave to his favorite son Joseph?  No doubt a very skilled weaver with a wonderful eye for color! We as a people have always had great reverence for artistic talent as one of God's gifts channeled through humans.  Like music, art is a universal language that can be appreciated by people of all ages and backgrounds. In that vein, the Jewish Collaborative is committed to showcasing some of the remarkable fine artistic talent hidden within the Orange County Jewish community.

Beginning in 2021, we will be featuring the work and stories about a local artist every few months as a way of building community through shared passions and interests.

Michael Chylinski

BIOGRAPHY: Orange County Artist Michael Chylinski works in a variety mediums, using bold colors, materials, textures and symbolism in a graphic and illustrative style. Mike's life-long interest in art began in grade school.  In the computer age he became fascinated with scanners, Photoshop, Illustrator, and desktop publishing. Mike's choice to pursue art as a profession came after going through multiple surgeries over several years.  In 1996 he decided art was a great way to spend time recovering at home. His early projects included mosaic chess tables and dapper hats and caps that he initially sewed by hand.  Mike is always learning to work with new media.  After years of training, Mike designs his own patterns and is a sewing machine master.  He also works in ceramics and welding.
Michael's thematic art contains symbols of protection like the hamsa, skulls, the number 3 (representing the "3 little words" - I Love You, "I'm Third" - God first, others second, I'm third, or "Body - Mind - Spirit").  The Adventures of Wheeler cartoon was created to offer people with movement challenges a way to cope with limitations.
