Havdalah Together: Remix Judaism
On Saturday, June 12, 8:00 P.M. (PDT) at our Havdalah Together program, guest presenter Roberta Kwall will speak about her book, Remix Judaism. Join us on Zoom here. You can also view the conversation on our Facebook page here.
Remix Judaism: Preserving Tradition in a Diverse World articulates a distinct vision for Judaism that illustrates how people can deepend their connection to authentic Jewish tradition by performing selected rituals consistently, and attaching a personal meaning to them.
The book offers an eloquent and thoughtful new vision for all Jews seeking a sense of belonging in a changing world, regardless of their current level of observance. Kwall sets out a process of selection, rejection, and modification of rituals that allow for a focus on Jewish tradition rather than on the technicalities of Jewish law.
Her goal is not to sell her own religious practices to readers but, rather, to encourage them to find their own personal meaning in Judaism outside the dictates of Commandment by broadening their understanding of how law, culture and tradition fit together. In Remix Judaism, Kwall inspires her audience to be intentional and mindful about the space they allocate for these elements in defining their individual Jewish journeys and identities.
Remix Judaism can be purchased on Amazon.
Roberta Rosenthal Kwall is the Raymond P. Niro Professor at DePaul University College of Law. Professor Kwall earned her JD from the University of Pennsylvania and received her undergraduate degree in Religious Studies from Brown University. She also has a Master's Degree in Jewish Studies.

Mordecai Kaplan transformed American Judaism by reframing it as a living civilization rather than simply a religion. His vision gave rise to the Reconstructionist Jewish Movement and reshaped Jewish institutions, turning them into spaces of cultural and social life including the concepts for synagogue-centers, the Havurah movement and Hillel.
His ideas continue to leave a lasting mark on Jewish life across the denominational spectrum.
