SPEAKER BIOS

Kiyomi Kowalski of Jewbian Princess is a mom, a Marine Corps veteran, an activist, and a social justice advocate. From 1997 to 2001, Kiyomi was an active-duty Marine, during which time she served both at home and abroad and achieved the rank of Corporal. After being honorably discharged, Kiyomi attended the California State University of Northridge, where she earned a Bachelor’s in political science. Kiyomi then went on to law school, earning a Juris Doctorate with Public Service Distinction from Southwestern Law School in 2012. Since graduating law school, Kiyomi has continued her education, both formally and informally, and, most recently, earned a certificate in Diversity and Inclusion from Cornell University.

April Powers of Jewbian Princess is the Chief Equity & Inclusion Officer for the Society of Children’s Book Writers & Illustrators, SCBWI.org. A highly-rated trainer for Fortune 50, government and non-profit organizations, she is also the Managing Director of First Impression Rx, a full service consulting firm that helps companies manage differences through training and diversity and inclusion strategy.

Her client work includes LGBTQI+ bench-marking through the Human Rights Campaign, project managing a cultural dexterity roll-out and delivering certified training in the areas of Generational Diversity, Intersectionality, Unconscious Bias, Communication, Emotional Intelligence, LBGTQI+ Understanding, Empathy, Customer Service, Effective Teams, Effective Communication, Positive Workplace, Climate Reality, Difficult Conversations and Cultural Competence.

After graduating from UC Berkeley, April began her recruiting career with Ryan, Miller & Associates; launched Manifest Search; then became the Manager of Diversity and Recruiting for Nestlé USA as well as an Inclusion Trainer & Consultant at Amgen. 

Dr. Saba Soomekh is the Associate Director at the human rights organization, American Jewish Committee-Los Angeles, and a lecturer at The Academy for Jewish Religion-CA, where she teaches Religious Studies and Middle Eastern History courses. She received her BA in Religious Studies from the University of California, Berkeley. Her Masters in Theological Studies from Harvard Divinity School and her Ph.D. in Religious Studies from the University of California, Santa Barbara.

Dr. Soomekh teaches and writes extensively on World Religions, Women and Religion, intersectionality and its impact on the Jewish community, and the geo-politics of the Middle East. She is a participant in the 2021 Fellows Program at King Abdullah bin Abdulaziz International Centre for Interreligious and Intercultural Dialogue (KAICIID), an inter-governmental organization that promotes inter-religious dialogue to prevent and resolve conflict. In the summer of 2019, Dr. Soomekh was a Scholar-in-Residence at Oxford University with the Institute for the Study of Global Antisemitism and Policy.
