Dear Friends,
“Praised are You, Adonai our God, who rules the universe, enabling us to distinguish day from night.” This blessing - said every morning at the beginning of Birchot haShahar (our preliminary prayers) - literally expresses our gratitude for being able to hear the crow of the rooster and rise with the sun. As with all liturgy and scripture, the peshat (literal meaning), barely mines the depth of the text. One could be saying, “Thank You, God, for helping me to see light within the darkness” or “…for enabling me to discover opportunity amid closure and change.” Personally, right now, this blessing speaks to the daily miracle of human ingenuity, creativity and optimism.
The Jewish Collaborative is currently unveiling a range of new opportunities for meaningful Jewish connection that we never before thought possible:
Our Tzedak-a-the-Month Club is providing food and necessities to our partner organizations that are on the front lines serving OC’s growing homeless and food-insecure population. Since March we have purchased 15,000 disinfectant wipes and provided 1000 meal kits. CLICK HERE to participate and keep the compassion flowing!
On Saturday, May 30, A Seudah of Sephirot will feature insights of creative women scholars, sure to open your hearts and minds to Torah in artful ways. This event is for both men and women. CLICK HERE to register.
JCoOC is proudly participating in our community-wideTikkun L’eil Shavuot that will take place on Thursday night, May 28. CLICK HERE for more information and to register.
OCEgal, a Sunday through Thursday nightly egalitarian minyan, will launch on Zoom beginning Sunday, May 31. Email Joy@JewishCollaborativeOC.org for more information and to join the interest list.
Additional classes and programs will be added throughout the summer, so stay tuned.
“Praised are You, Adonai our God, who rules the universe, restoring vigor to the weary.” This penultimate blessing recited at the opening of our daily prayers is also imbued with new meaning. We are weary from 9+ weeks of sheltering in place, homeschooling, working virtually or not being able to work at all, living in fear and wondering when the cloud will lift. May we all be granted vigor to face each new day and challenge with courage, hope and the ability to see cracks of light illuminating darkness.
Shabbat Shalom u’mevorakh,
Rabbi Marcia Tilchin
