In the coming weeks, through prayer and learning, we are about to encounter the many faces of God and take a long, hard look at the sweep of our lives. Like a tree trunk that adds a layer of bark with each natural cycle of seasons, every twelve months we add a year of deeds, relationships, achievements and mistakes that give us greater insight into how we are interfacing with the world around us and what we might do better.
How do we hope to grow in the coming year? Some of the resources provided below may help us answer this profound question:
Please join us for a collaborative Selichot program and service with Temple Beth Shalom of Long Beach, beginning at 8:30pm on Saturday night, August 28. Cantor Judy Sofer will share some music with her choir and special guest, Raymond Zachary. Rabbis David Cantor and Marcia Tilchin will lead a study session on Unataneh Tokef, a key theological anchor of the season as expressed through poetry.
We also encourage you to attend Selichot Night Live - five hours of inspirational learning offered by some of Americas finest scholars and clergy teaching in 30-minute segments. This program begins Saturday evening at 5:30pm Pacific time / 8:30pm Eastern. Come and go as you please using the link provided.
Have you ever wondered why High Holiday services seem so long with so much liturgy added to the standard Shabbat and weekday prayer structure? If so, you will LOVE this teaching video - Tour of the Mahzor - featuring Rabbi Elie Kaunfer, co-founder of Hadar Institute in New York. Aside from being a complete mensch, Rabbi Kaunfer is one of the finest teachers of Jewish liturgy in our time.
Looking for additional inspiration for the season? Download Hadar’s High Holiday Companion Reader, Zochreinu L’Hayyim: Memory and Promise, to keep you company before, during and between services.
Wishing you a Shabbat Shalom and Sweet New Year,
The Collaborative Team
