A GLOBAL JUSTICE MOVEMENT FOR ALL
This week's parashah, Shoftim, begins with three well-known psukim from Deuteronomy central to shaping our understanding that the pursuit of justice and fairness at all times is a foundational Jewish ethic:
You shall appoint magistrates and officials for your tribes, in all the settlements that your God יהוה is giving you, and they shall govern the people with due justice. You shall not judge unfairly: you shall show no partiality; you shall not take bribes, for bribes blind the eyes of the discerning and upset the plea of the just. Justice, justice shall you pursue, that you may thrive and occupy the land that your God יהוה is giving you. (Deut 16:18-20)
There are frameworks for justice-oriented practices to be gleaned from many parshiot in the Torah and throughout rabbinic literature. In this vein, it is our pleasure to introduce JCoOC readers to an inspiring organization started by Rabbi Shmuly Yanklowitz called Valley Beit Midrash: A Global Center for Learning and Action. Under this specialized learning umbrella, Rabbi Yanklowitz convenes - both online and in-person - some of Judaism's greatest minds and hearts to teach and inspire Jews of all ages and others looking to exercise values of compassion, lovingkindness, righteousness and fairness through a spiritual and scripturally-centered lens.
Click here to enjoy some teachings from recent parshiot, including Shoftim.
Valley Beit Midrash is a forward-thinking, pluralistic not-for-profit organization rooted in Jewish ethics that is committed to improving lives in our communities through Torah learning, social action, and leadership development.
