RABBI'S MESSAGE - REMEMBER US FOR LIFE!
While in rabbinical school at the Jewish Theological Seminary, I worked with NYC radio personality, Larry Josephson, to produce several radio programs that offered an in-depth exploration of the theological underpinnings of all the Jewish holidays.
This interview with then JTS Chancellor, Ismar Schorsch, titledRemember us Unto Life - about the Days of Awe - received great acclaim. It's a wonderful way to enter the mindset of the mahzor (High Holiday prayerbook) and inspirational seasonal themes. Listen and enjoy!
We hope you have a place to spend some spiritual time on RoshHashanah and Yom Kippur. All are welcome to join the Collaborative for worship, hikes, meals, Twelve Step meetings and more. Click here to see our menu of programs and RSVP.
Thoughts on seasonal prayer: Two verses from Psalm 27 that are recited every morning and evening during the preparatory month of Elul capture simply and elegantly the essence and purpose of High Holiday liturgy.
Oh Lord, hear my voice when I call. Be gracious to me and answer.
It is You that I seek, says my heart. It is your Presence that I seek, O Lord. (Psalm 27:9-10)
We are attached to the rituals and music of the High Holidays because of their extraordinary texture and historical significance. But, in earnest, how many High Holiday shulgoers enter Rosh Hashanah worship ready to pour their hearts out to God in hopes of having a breakthrough?
"Be gracious to me and answer" sets the stage for our longing. Three times a day we implore in every Amidah during the Aseret Y'mei T'shuvah (the Ten Days of Repentance): "Zochreinu l'chaim, Melekh Hafeitz b'Hayim, v'khotveinu b'sefer hahayim - Remember us for life, Sovereign who delights in life, and inscribe us in the Book of Life..." We must believe that this request is having an impact on the universe in some profound way.
If executed with sincerity, our prayers are ultimately designed to change US - those who recited them. At the same time, it is important to understand that, if the pursuit of a closer relationship with God is embedded into the DNA of all worship (as Psalm 27 suggests), our prayerful pleas have the potential for cosmic impact.
As we prepare to come together for Selichot on the eve of September 17 at our respective houses of worship, may these beautiful services inspire us to seek and find God many times over.
Shanah Tovah Tikateivu v'teihateimu - May you be inscribed and sealed for a blessed year,
