Monday, February 6 - T"u b'Shevat Virtual Lobby Day
Meet with members of congress to advocate for two important legislative bills Register Now:bit.ly/tubishvatlobby
Tu b'Shevat, originally a new year marker needed to measure fruit tithing from cultivated trees, has taken on important environmental implications as the Earth Justice Movement has grown. Every step we take to be better environmental stewards, both in our personal and public lives is important.
This year, Jewish Earth Alliance is providing an opportunity for us to advocate for responsible environmental stewardship by helping participants schedule convenient virtual meetings with our respective Members of Congress. We will lobby in groups in support of the two Bills described below. Jewish Earth Alliance will prepare us and provide everything we need to make an impact with our legislators. Register Here "Recovering America's Wildlife" Bill
The Recovering America's Wildlife Actwas dropped from the Omnibus Appropriations Bill (Omnibus Bill) at the very last moment. Although this is disappointing, bi-partisan support for the bill is giving supporters hope. Members of Congress are already planning to reintroduce the bill in the 118th Congress.
Though not nearly as generous as the funding that would be provided by the Recovering America's Wildlife Act, the Omnibus Bill does includefunding to protect wildlife. The Bureau of Land Management was allocated $34 million for endangered species. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service has $296 million to restore and protect healthy populations of fish, wildlife, and plants and the environments upon which they depend, as well as $542 million for national wildlife refuges. The Environmental Protection Agency would get a $374 million increase in funding for its science and environmental program work, a $94.5 million increase to restore water bodies like the Great Lakes, and environmental justice will get an $8 million increase to $108 million.
Climate Measures in the 2023 U.S. Farm Bill
Farming can support the environment and agriculture can be a solution to climate change, but it also can come at a cost to the climate and to social justice. We must advocate for an agricultural system that embraces the Jewish value of respect for the sacredness of Earth and its inhabitants.
Download JEA's Action Alert so we can tell our Members of Congress to support the Agriculture Resilience Act provisions as part of the 2023 U.S. Farm Bill. View the recording of Jewish Earth Alliance's December network meeting on the Farm Bill.
Thank you for embracing the Jewish ethical mandate to protect this miraculous planet we are blessed to call home and the stunning array of precious plant, animal and human life that it nurtures every day.
