WHAT DOES ALL THIS MEAN TO YOU? That is the $64,000 question at every Passover seder. Depending on what word one emphasizes in this sentence, we can show ourselves to be wise, challenging or simple. Passover is known by four names and means something different to each of us at various stages of life.
Hag HaAviv - The holiday of Spring
Hag HaMatzot - The holiday of Unleavened Bread
Hag HaPesah - The holiday of the Paschal Sacrifice
Hag HaHeirut - The holiday of Freedom.                             Â
The biblical mandate to rid our homes of hametz is the origin of what Americans call "spring cleaning." For those compelled to clean their homes from top to bottom and change all their dishes and cookware for Passover, Hag HaAviv might be the focus. For those who find inspiration through the Passover story to support people living in oppressive circumstances, it is likely Hag HaHeirut. Those who emphasize the ritual of the seder and the biblical drama at its core might select Hag HaPesah. And for those who struggle with (or enjoy) the rigid 8 days of dietary restrictions, it could be Hag HaMatzot. Inviting people at your seder to share which of these four holiday names resonates most will be a great conversation starter during the Magid part of the evening.
Each component of this rich holiday is an important thread in the fabric of Passover that defines our birth as Am Yisrael and the ethical mandates required from us as a liberated people. On this Shabbat HaGadol, the entire Collaborative Team joins me in wishing you and your loved ones a zissen (sweet) and meaningful holiday.  Shabbat Shalom.
