An Unexpected Voice of Reason In this week’s parashah, the well-regarded prophet, Bilaam, son of Beor is summoned by Moabite King Balak to curse the Israelites so he can overcome them in battle before they threaten his kingdom. Not an Israelite, Bilaam is a legitimate prophet who already has a relationship with and reverence for the God of Israel. He knows from the get-go that Balak's request will send him on an ill-fated mission, but like many in his position, he is swayed by power, prestige and the promise of great wealth. For a period of time, Bilaam loses his way and, in classic fable fashion (think Aesop), it is his devoted donkey (whose mouth is opened by God) that helps him come to his senses. The donkey’s flat-out refusal to move forward saves Bilaam from imminent Divine punishment.
There is a piece of Bilaam in all of us. Most people have good instincts, but often there is so much noise coming at us from every direction that we are compelled to make unhealthy and, at times, unethical choices. In light of what is going on across the globe, we can see daily examples of how people working in public office are particularly susceptible to losing sight of their core mission – to make life better and safer for the people who elected them to office. This trend is so commonplace that, when we encounter leaders who are able to maintain integrity and consistency in service to their constituencies, we are a bit in awe.
The story of Bilaam and his loyal donkey can inspire us to come back to ourselves in a way that enables us to comprehend the veiled blessings in our midst and invite us to realize the wholesome ways that we can better do God’s will on earth. It begins by cultivating a deeper connection to our animal instincts (our inner-donkeys, if you will) so we are less swayed by shiny promises that both alure and mislead.
